More than 700 wine lovers attended the opening of the Tops at Spar Wine Show presented by the Cape Times at GrandWest Casino on Thursday night.

Organisers are expecting a bumper crowd for today and Saturday shows, with exhibitors anticipating brisk trade of their top wines selling at low show prices.

Show-stoppers such as Perdeberg "the home of Chenin Blanc" are exhibiting, along with Allesverloren from the Swartland, while Die Mas van Kakamas from the Northern Cape showcase their finest brandy.

Look out for Jan Harmsgat, Kunjani, Leipzig Winery, Stofberg Family Vineyards and Seven Oaks, to name a few. The team at Kleine Zalze Wines were all smiles at their stand, having just scored a top international award.

Among the exhibitors are a number of emerging black winemakers, including Koni and Ses'fikile. A team of women winemakers from Worcester are behind the Ses'fikile label, giving real meaning to their name "We have arrived" as they enter a traditionally male-dominated industry.

Back by popular demand is the Cape Times Wine Theatre where wine-makers share their knowledge in 45-minute info-tainment sessions of wine tasting, and glass and wine pairing. There is also the #sawineshowcase Theatre presented by storyteller Jon Meinking.
