London – Britons own an average of six recipe books yet make the same nine meals over and over again, a poll reveals.

One in five people hasn’t introduced a new dish to their repertoire for more than a year.

The survey of 2,000 adults for online supermarket Ocado shows that an inability to find the more unusual ingredients needed for many dishes often stops home cooks being as adventurous as they want to be.

But one in three says they do travel for up to an hour to buy a particular foodstuff to make a dish.

Ocado has joined forces with TV chef Tom Kerridge to launch Britain’s Next Top Supplier, an initiative to give cooks better access to unusual ingredients.

Mr Kerridge said: ‘As a cooking nation we are at a crossroads, wanting to become more adventurous but sometimes finding it difficult to source the right ingredients.’
