M-Net’s popular cooking reality show My Kitchen Rules South Africa is back on-air tonight and with an instant restaurant set in Maboneng, Jozi’s trendy hotbed of creative splendour.
Tonight’s show sees “food buddies” Donald, 28, who is a Zimbabwean born photographer based in Johannesburg and Luyanda, 24, who is a food blogger and YouTuber also based in Johannesburg, creating a surprise feast which could secure them a spot at the #MKRSA Headquarters, where the next phase of the competition will play out.
Asked about their love for cooking, Donald says he always loved cooking.
Since he was young his father used to make him watch over some pots while he was busy and this just taught him how to handle stuff in the kitchen, while Luyanda started cooking when she was seven-years-old and took lessons from the Food Network and YouTube.
“When I finished school, I wanted to be a doctor but I studied Geology. I ended up studying finance and logistics, and then, somehow, I got into food when my grandmother passed away and I started cooking as a form of therapy and it led me into the food world” she says.
Speaking about why they entered the show and how it has been for them so far, Donald says they love good food and have always explored when it came to food and they thought what a better way to improve their skills and learn while also showing what they can do and hopefully win the million Rand.
“It's been a learning curve for us as the show teaches you a lot about yourself and your partner in the competition and just how important communication is” he says.
In the previous episode, married couple Maritsa and Maradine from Bloemfontein set a new standard for the show with a whopping 70 points out of 100- a big leap forward for MKRSA.
All future efforts will be measured against the three-course feast with which they stunned celebrity judges J’Something and David Higgs as well as their fellow Table 2 contestants, and the confident pair is hoping to overtake them.
My Kitchen Rules airs on M-Net channel 101 tonight at 6 pm.
