Cape Town - A chocolate cake recipe is doing the rounds on Facebook and people are raving about it.

No eggs, milk or butter, and it is mixed into the baking tin.

A step-by-step video has been viewed more than 20 million times since it was posted on Facebook on February 1.

Considering the different health crazes, one would be forgiven for thinking it was created recently, but it was devised during the Great Depression, when money was tight and dairy was a luxury out of reach of most people.

The one-pot wonder cake is also known as crazy cake and those who have made it say the cake is moist and has a delicious fudgy taste.

For the cake you will need:

1½ cup all-purpose (cake) flour

3 tablespoons cocoa powder

1 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon baking soda

½ teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon white vinegar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

5 tablespoons vegetable oil

1 cup water

METHOD:

Preheat the oven to 177ºC, grease a cake pan and mix all the dry ingredients together.

Make three depressions in the mixture, two small and one large.

Pour the vinegar into one of the small holes and the vanilla into the other.

The vegetable oil goes into the large depression.

Pour water over everything and then mix again until smooth.

Bake for 35 minutes and allow to cool before frosting with your favourite icing.
