Imagine bacon perfectly-crisped and delightfully greasy, rashers of smoked glory. Now, take it up a notch: bigger, better and Insta-friendly. Say hello to millionaire’s bacon - the next best thing in bacon since, erm, bacon.
More flavour-dense than its slender counterpart, millionaire’s bacon is typically half an inch thick and is slow-cooked for several hours. Think of it as a Krispy Kreme meets a T-bone steak. Hailed as “the next avocado toast,” millionaire’s bacon is set to take the US by storm and is already cropping up across a number of competing eateries in the San Francisco Bay Area.
“The taste is succulent, sweet and spicy with many different spices going in. It’s very complex,” said Hoyul Steven Choi, co-owner of Sweet Maple, a popular brunch spot in San Francisco that is renowned for its take on the elevated candied bacon dish. He explained to the San Francisco Gate that the thick pieces of pork are covered in sugar and cayenne pepper before being left in the oven to cook for a few hours at a low temperature. It might sound like an obesity epidemic waiting to happen but according to Choi, Sweet Maple’s signature dish is driving customers from all over the country to his restaurant.
However, like all food trends that came before, it’s pretty pricey (you didn’t seriously think that millionaire’s bacon would be affordable, did you?) coming in at $14 (R190) for two strips at some restaurants.
The popular dish is already a bonafide insta-hit, with more than 1700 bacon-lovers sharing their excitement on the photo-sharing platform under #millionairebacon.
It’s only a matter of time until savvy marketers start wising up to the plethora of buzzword opportunities provided by breakfast foods.
