Chinchilla Rooftop Cafe and  Bar is the first restaurant of its kind in Cape Town, boasting picturesque views of the beachfront and endless blue skies.

This exclusive venue is on the second floor in The Promenade Building in Camps Bay and is the perfect spot to watch the sunset while enjoying sundowners with friends.

The casual yet elegant decor seamlessly combines the bar, lounge and dining area into a relaxed setting.

We were invited for dinner and drinks, arriving from 6pm, to experience the vibrant Chinchilla nightlife complete with live music.

The menu is easy to read. If you’re looking for something light to eat, the options include oysters, prawn cocktail, Caprese salad or beef carpaccio.

I had the prawn cocktail with pink sauce, avocado, lemon, sea salt and black pepper, while my dining partner had the three oysters with black pepper and lemon. The pink sauce went down really well with the fresh prawns and avo, and the oysters were deliciously fresh.

From mains I went with our waitress’s recommendation of linguine, which came with shallots, garlic, thyme, tomato, mussels, clams and white fish.

While the meal was delicious, the long prawn tentacles tangled in the pasta made it very difficult for me to eat.

CHILL FACTOR: Fresh oysters on ice.

My partner went with a much easier choice, a beef burger with mustard, cornichons, red onion, lettuce, tomato, pink sauce and aged cheddar.

The different flavours on the burger worked well. This is a much better option to go with the vibrant, casual feel of the place.

Other options include chicken paillard (chicken breast, lemon, fresh herbs, olive oil, sea salt and black pepper), monk fish goujons (with breadcrumbs, lemon, sea salt, black pepper and tartar sauce) and grilled lobster.

The drinks menu has a variety of signature cocktails. Classic cocktails include a margarita, Long Island ice

tea and mojito. There’s an extensive wine list.
