It's not often you can find a place that can keep the kids occupied while you enjoy wholesome food in a relaxed and warm environment, particularly in the heart of winter.

Many eateries cater to families with bespoke outdoor play areas, jungle gyms, and activities, but not many places have an indoor play area as well, leaving parents to juggle toddlers and forks while downing their meals as quickly as possible to avoid the tots becoming irritable.

Not so at Black & Brew, at the Village Farm in Hout Bay. Indoors, there’s a comfortable nook with poufs, play mats, chalkboards, Lego blocks, books and toys, all within view, and crucially, within grasp of the adult seating.

On drier days, the outdoor play area is a boon for stressed out parents, with splash pools, a trampoline, a huge pirate ship-inspired jungle gym, sandpit and easy access to tame, barnyard animals. Picture: Lisa Charles

The smash burger is beefy, juicy and delicious. There’s a vegetarian pasta that comes with the most amazing crispy spinach balls. And the prices are just right.

The most expensive item on the menu is the burger at R85.

For us - a grown couple, a pre-teen, a child and a toddler - with hot chocolate and flat whites thrown into the mix, our bill was R500, including a tip.
