I don't have much of a sweet tooth, but there are two desserts I simply can’t say no to — cheesecake and lemon meringue.
It was just my luck that I was invited to enjoy a "cheesecake experience" at Sweet Cillie’s cakery and deli in Tokai.
This was an invitation I couldn’t refuse.
Located along Tokai Main Road, opposite Blue Route Mall, Sweet Cillie’s adopted the title as Cape Town’s cheesecake hotspot.
Named after the owner, Cilla de Jonge, the bakery is celebrating its birthday month with an array of sweet offerings during September.
It was clear from the moment I walked in that this cosy little spot is a favourite among the older, more mature cake lovers.
It was after 11am on a cold and grey day and a slice of cheesecake and coffee is exactly what I needed to sweeten the day.
Lemon cheesecake
With all the delicious cakes and cupcakes on display I could hardly decide which one to try, so with Cilla’s help, I settled for a slice of lemon cheesecake, with a dollop of cream on the side and a cup of coffee.
Turns out the lemon cheesecake is one of the favourites desserts and I could see - or rather taste- why.
The cake had the perfect creamy texture with a soft base. The cream also perfectly complemented the sweetness of the cake.
Cilla always wanted to own her own shop and says she inherited her love for cakes and baking from both grandmothers.
"We make everything ourselves, from the cakes, pies and the quiches. The different cheesecakes we have is black forest, carrot and lemon - which is very popular- and also the regular berry ones. I like playing around with flavours," Cilla says.
Sweet Cillie's offers a delicious variety of cheesecakes.
Other unique cheesecake flavours include praline, chai, brownie, red velvet even pumpkin and peanut butter.
The cakes are available at R35 per slice or if you love it so much you can order the whole cake from between R300 and R450.
Sweet Cillie's is open Monday-Friday from 7:30am - 5:30pm and Saturdays from 9am to 2pm.
