Sweet potatoes have, over the years, enjoyed  their status as the carb of choice for many people who are on the clean eating trend. They are healthier than their cousin, the potato. And they taste (and look) better, too. So what’s not to love?

It’s with this in mind that sisters, Thobeka and Lihle Dlamini, who are sweet potato connoisseurs, founded their food service, My Sweet Potato.

My Sweet Potato is a food service provider that focuses on lifestyle social markets, corporate events and private functions in and around Joburg.

The sisters hail from Umlazi, a township south of Durban. Lihle said they decided to take sweet potato and incorporate it into sweet, savoury and gourmet dishes that people will absolutely love.

“I’m a food creative in that I can use any ‘boring’ ingredients and turn them into something really spectacular," explains Lihle.

"And, when I decided to stop eating simple carbohydrates, I had to get really creative with the food I made. This is when my love for sweet potato developed. It is healthy, nutritious, affordable and really yum.

There isn’t a single thing you cannot do with sweet potato and, everything I made, people fell in love with… And so I decided to put my passion for making food and sweet potato together and make it a business.”

My Sweet Potato offers a variety of meal options like chicken and bacon stuffed with sweet potato; beef-stuffed sweet potato; sweet potato pancakes, with chicken strips or cinnamon and syrup; BBQ sticky wings with chicken strips and sweet potato fries; beef and bacon balls with sweet potato bake, beef sweet potato pie and sweet potato canapés (bacon and cheese or spinach and feta).

“Our sweet potato fries are hand-cut and freshly made for every serving. Most of our meals are grilled or roasted to keep in line with getting the best nutrients out of every meal", she said.
