Review: UberEATS- food at the tap of a touch screen

Uber, as you may know, is the popular taxi service that has rocked the world in the past four years. To access the services of the vehicles registered to Uber, all one needs is to register their app and then you are in business. The one thing that meter taxis cannot beat (apart from upgrading shady vehicles) is the practicality of Uber. You get to call it from wherever you are and thanks to the location services on your phone it pin-points where you are and a few cars that are in your vicinity. In a matter of minutes you are gone and you don’t have to worry about some taxi guy telling you that they are ‘five minutes’ away a hundred times.

Now take the same service, remove yourself from the car and place some hot food in there ordered by you. That’s UberEATS for you. Of course we have several existing ‘dial-a-delivery’ type of services but they all came with their shortfalls. With UberEATS you get a wider range of food suppliers other than the usual fast food places that we have been offering from existing service providers. So if you want a gourmet burger from The Hudson’s instead of a Big Mac then you can now get that.

The other plus that we never had before was that you do not have to worry about cash as the system deducts money from your card. That means no hassles with change or those dubious ‘petrol fees’ that other services factor in. As a service, Uber is relatively cheap and so you pay for the ride and the food.

Another by-product that comes with UberEATS, which the developers of the application may have not though of is gifting. Like with the taxi service, you can order a car for someone else and send it to them. So in this case you can do the food option, notify the recipient when it arrives and no points for guessing who is the knight in shining amour. '

Of course other sticky problems that come with ordering food from home, like missing salt and sauces may be found here and there, but when it comes to ordering food from your couch, UberEATS is the best runner that you have.

*Uber Eats is avaiable in Joburg and Cape Town
