South African bubbly sparkled at the top during an international battle of the bubbles.

The newly launched Durbanville Hills sparkling wine was named the top sparkling wine at the international wine challenge aptly named, Battle of the Bubbles.

The event was hosted by renowned Michelin star chef and wine explorer, Roger Jones which saw wines from producers across eight countries, including France and New Zealand, battle it out in the Champagne, Méthode Cap Classique (MCC) and Sparkling Wine categories.

Of the 37 wines entered, Durbanville Hills was awarded third place in the challenge, narrowly edged out by French Champagne and South African MCC.

Martin Moore, Cellar Master at Durbanville Hills, says the recognition is testament to the outstanding quality of South African sparkling wines.

Moore explains that Durbanville Hills decided to expand its Sauvignon Blanc range to include this vibrant sparkling wine due to the many successful Sauvignon Blanc vintages, which have accumulated multiple accolades over the years.

He says: “the new sparkling wine boasts a unique floral design, inspired by sunny South African summer days - truly a work of art that we hope will take pride of place at any event, from an intimate dinner to a wedding reception.”

The Battle of the Bubbles judging panel included some of Cape Town’s top sommeliers as well as Allan Mullins, the head of wines at Woolworths; Wines of South Africa (WOSA)’s CEO, Siobhan Thompson; and international wine judges Dr Winnie Bowman, Angela Lloyd, Lynne Sherriff MW & Fiona McDonald.
