Surprising health benefits of your orange juice

A daily glass of orange juice may help to sharpen memory as we age, according to scientists at Reading University.

They gave 37 people 500 ml of orange juice every day for eight weeks, and then tested their memory, reaction times and ability to recall memorised words quickly.

The participants in the trial were then given orange squash every day and put through the same memory tests eight weeks later.

After orange juice, the participants could remember 8 per cent more information than with orange squash.

The researchers believe that the flavonoids (natural plant chemicals) in the juice increase blood flow to the brain, which they say ‘improves connections between brain cells' and aids memory.
