If you are a foodie, it helps to stay on top of the latest quirky eating trends.

The year is coming to an end and with it comes food trends we truly cannot wait to see the back of.

I have just been introduced to the ‘fourth meal’ food trend and I'm already starting to like it.

From what I hear it is not a full meal - it’s just something to fill the void - healthy, or not-so-healthy.

I always have minimal time to do regular shopping or follow the standard three - meal - a - day norm so this one is definitely for me.

Rather than struggling through with just breakfast, lunch and dinner, I’ll be enjoying my ‘fourth meal’. And that either before bed time as supper or in the morning as breakfast.

So I spoke to the Open Food Group team about this latest trend and which foods are part of the fourth meal.

The Open Food group is a catering company delivering quality catering services for all events from selection of food platters to banquet and event management.

They said the fourth meal trend is the inclusion of a fourth meal or snack integrated into your day to either achieve some form of normality (eating something healthy after eating badly an entire day) or to prevent that afternoon slump (that heavenly dessert).

The team said this meal is becoming a trend because people have better understanding of their bodies and maintaining a normal blood sugar while understanding that every day needs a little bit of enjoyment (or treat).

- Baby Carrots with Blue Cheese

The team also said that this trend will not be taking over our food habits but will slowly integrate into everyone’s daily movements.
