Often you have to wonder, what is really in my food? And when it comes to meat the truth can be quite shocking.
This week, the Daily Mail reports that the Food Standards Agency (FSA) in the UK released some shocking stats about their meat
- More than a fifth of the 665 meat samples tested contained DNA from animals not listed on the label.
- They had 145 problem samples.
- 73 of the problem samples came from UK supermarkets.
- 22 of the problem samples came from processing plants.
- The remaining 50 problem samples came from restaurants.
Critics would point out that the samples came from “problem businesses” that might have been under the radar or under investigations; but the stats are still shocking.

In South Africa, it’s not unimaginable that we would have a similar problem. Meat imported into SA goes through different stages of production, especially in territories where food safety standards vary.
Contamination can take place during the processing process of in the complex meat supply chain when meat changes hands and factories before it reaches our plates.
