We've all been there, strolling down the aisles on the Saturday before Father's Day, looking for a gift for dad.

The main thing to remember when you're buying a last minute gift is that you don't want that it look like a last minute gift.

The only way to avoid that is if you honestly know what your dad wants and that can be a tricky question to answer.

The team at Pick n Pay surveyed 350 of its male parent customers and asked them to select the gifts they’d really like to receive this Father’s Day.

This is what your dad wants:

- The number one gift was whisky with 28% of respondents selecting this gift.

- Biltong (26%) came second and there was a tie for third place with a gift voucher, chocolate or a meal out at 20%.

- Socks were the third least favourite gift – with only 6% selecting this option. This was followed by deodorant (4%) and cake (2%) being named the least favourite gift.

Head of Marketing at Pick n Pay, John Bradshaw, says: "A meal at a restaurant was listed in the top three gift preferences, but it is sometimes better to make the occasion really special by having an amazing Father’s Day meal at home and save money at the same time."

He adds: "This can be done with minimal effort thanks to the variety of ready-made meals available, ranging from tasty tapas to full delicious meals, snacks, salads and desserts."
