IF you want to hang on to your brain power, leave the car in the garage, a study suggests.

Researchers have found that driving for more than two hours a day can reduce your IQ by speeding up the effects of age on the brain.

They say that the results could be explained by the fact that both the mind and the body are less active on long car journeys.

The project saw more than half a million Britons aged 37-73 studied over five years, taking memory and IQ tests. Out of these, some 93,000 drove more than two or three hours a day.

The Leicester University study found that not only did this proportion of subjects typically have lower brain power to begin with, but their IQ score declined more rapidly over the course of the study than those who did little or no driving.
