CAPE TOWN -

A study by The American Academy of Pediatrics, has found that working in a childcare environment where safety measures are in place does not add risk to adults contracting the coronavirus.

The coronavirus outbreak has disrupted schools and child care facilities globally, and within one week of the World Health Organization’s declaration of the pandemic, over 100 countries implemented school closures.

“No association was found between exposure to child care and Covid-19 in both unmatched and matched analyses. In the matched analysis, being a home-based provider was associated with Covid-19, but showed no interaction with exposure.

“Exposure to child care during the early months of the U.S. pandemic was not associated with elevated risk for Covid-19 transmission to providers,” read the statement.

Following a survey of more than 57 000 childcare workers, lead author Walter Gilliam from Yale University Child Study Center said that people who returned to work had no additional risk of contracting the virus considering all safety protocols are implemented.
