SA Coronavirus infections surge to over 200

CAPE TOWN - Coronavirus infections in South Africa have breached the 200 mark, Minister of Health Dr Zweli Mkhize announced on Friday.

The infection rate has steadily increased since the first reported infection in KwaZulu-Natal almost two weeks ago and currently sits at 202. The majority of infections have been recorded amongst persons that have either travelled abroad recently or have come into contact with persons that have travelled.

Mkhize said that the immediate goal for the country was to contain the infection rate.

"We cannot allow the rate of infection to increase rapidly and overwhelm the healthcare system," said Mkhize.

He said that projections showed that between 60 percent to 70 percent of the population could end up being infected but there was no need for panic.

"The human body can build immunity towards the virus but we must ensure we contain infections," he said.

There have been no reported deaths from the Coronavirus in South Africa.
