Jade has taken up the challenge to participate in her first triathlon at the 30th Freshpak Fitness Festival on Saturday 1 October in Clanwilliam.

Known as “GI Jade” to her peers,  Jade Hubner is extremely passionate about life and enjoys participating in a wide range of physical activities. Having never before attempted to participate in a triathlon, she has grabbed this opportunity by the horns and is currently training with fitness coach Steve Atwell for her first race.

We chatted to her to find out how she will prepare for her first race.

What are you expecting from participating in your first triathlon or looking forward to most?

I am really looking forward to getting fit and being proud of myself for completing my first triathlon. I am looking forward to not doing it alone and meeting new people along the way. There is also a charitable side to it, we are also giving back to a cause very close to my heart, CANSA. Cancer has affected my family and many others. We often take what we have and our abilities for granted. I feel that it is important to do what we can and always give back.

What are your five tips for living a healthy lifestyle/tips that you live by?

Basically my attitude and don’t be too hard on yourself.

Aim for a do-able, happy lifestyle.

If you struggle to go to the gym mentally like I do, then trick yourself and do some activities.

If you struggle to motivate yourself then definitely do it with a class or train with friends.

If your friends can never commit then join a running club, training squad or classes. There is always a way to make it fun so that it doesn't feel like exercise or an impossible task.

What about nutrition? What are your do’s or don’ts?

The best way to keep healthy and remain in shape is to say no to sugar and carbs (excluding and of course limiting the following to two a day: One slice of 100% rye, sweet potatoes, one banana and maybe some oats).

Allow yourself to have a cheat day every few days but don't indulge/binge.

Never deprive yourself and listen to your body, otherwise you will binge and not be able to stop. It's hard but everything in moderation is best.

Do you have an inspirational message for your fans?

We always underestimate what we can do. I promise you, you can always do more than you think! You are far stronger than you realise. There is a lot we cannot control BUT we can choose how we react to it and what we do!
