CAPE TOWN- Representatives from the WHO have acknowledged that South Africa's "aggressive strategy" in managing the Covid-19 outbreak is beginning to flatten the curve.
"We think that what they are doing may be starting to have an impact, but we would like to acknowledge that they have taken on a very aggressive case identification and testing in the community level strategy."
World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Africa Dr Matshidiso Moeti shared these sentiments during a live online media briefing with experts from the World Economic Forum and the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) on Covid-19 in Africa.
South Africa currently has the largest number of cases on the continent with 2506 infections.
Dr Moeti said the South African government took strong action against the outbreak once it realised local transmissions began increasing.
"South Africa was one of the earliest countries with capacity to test for Covid-19, and then they have done strong work with contact tracing. There seems to be a slowing down of the spread, so the curve is bending," she said.
