Sometimes choosing a style for your home is the best way to spruce things up without a complete makeover.

A Mediterranean design is a popular choice for many because of its warm rustic vibe, vibrant colours and classic feel – perfect for creating a laid-back environment for friends and family, and ideal for South Africa’s sunny climate.

Tile Africa Clearwater’s design advisor, Zenea Rulf, has a few tips and tricks on how to achieve this look with ease.

Colour coded

Mediterranean architecture is often inspired by the natural colours seen all around us. Deep blues and greens, warm earth tones and wood-look tiles are ideal when it comes to achieving a traditional look that has a relaxed, holiday feel to it.

Pattern perfect

Mosaic patterns for your walls are the best way to achieve a true Mediterranean look and feel, and with so many types of sheet mosaics and decor tiles to choose from, you’ll land up with a design that’s truly unique. Geometric patterns and floral designs are also great options for achieving this look, and most striking when contrasted with rustic decor and antique finds.

Fixed-up floors

Wood-look tiles are a great way of highlighting the decor patterned tiles and other Mediterranean styled accessories in your home while adding a bit of warmth. Should you prefer not to go with the busy or patterned tile options for your floor, wood-look is a very popular choice when it comes to a more understated, natural look.

Extra elements

A Mediterranean style can also be created using different accessories and accent features. Things like curtains, lighting fixtures and rustic furniture are all simple yet highly effective additions that can change the look and feel of a room. Antique stores are a great, inexpensive source of unique finds, many of which will be weathered from years of love, making the perfect addition to a Mediterranean-inspired home.

By making just a few small changes, you’ll be surprised by how easy it is to transform your existing space into a Mediterranean haven, without having to spend too much money.
