Asking someone to spend the rest of their life with you takes a certain kind of panache. Picture: Pixabay

Extravagant, expensive and dramatic - you wouldn’t expect anything less from a celebrity proposal, writes Marchelle Abrahams.

Love is a wonderful thing. It makes you do crazy things like fly halfway across the world to declare your unwavering commitment to the one you see yourself spending the rest of your life with.

That’s the fantasy. In reality, it usually involves going down on bended knee and hoping for a heart-stopping moment that your person says “yes”. It’s the reason we live vicariously through celebrities who push the boat out when proposing. Sigh! We know what you’re thinking: “If only it were me.”

Last week, social media went into full lovey dovey mode when Idols SA judge Somizi Mhlongo proposed to his beau, Mohale Motaung, during a romantic trip to Paris. The local media personality then detailed how it all went down in a video posted on Twitter.

It’s grand gestures like these that make us get all sorts of feelings and believe that love will find a way.

Extravagant, expensive and dramatic - you wouldn’t expect anything less from a celeb proposal. Here are our top picks of swoon-worthy proposals:

If you want to go big, take a page out of Kanye West’s book. Never one to do things in half measures, the rapper flew in Kim Kardashian’s family for the elaborate gesture and brought in a 50-piece orchestra playing Lana Del Rey’s Young and Beautiful while he popped the question at the AT&T Stadium in San Francisco.

A blindfolded Kim was left speechless when he presented her with a giant 15-carat, cushion-cut diamond from jeweller Lorraine Schwartz. See if you can beat that!

What tradition?

Pop star Pink used the same non-conformist attitude she brings to her music when popping the question to then-boyfriend Carey Hart. In 2005, she held up a sign with “Will you marry me?” while the Motocross champ was competing at the Pro 250 class finals. When Hart went by on the next lap, she wrote another message: “I’m serious!”

The couple tied the knot a year later. Despite their well-publicised bust-ups, they remain together today and have two children.

Lost for words

Black Panther actor Atandwa Kani was literally lost for words while starring in a theatre play in 2015. He didn’t have any lines, but during one scene he started speaking unexpectedly and proposed, on camera, to Lesotho-born actress Fikile Mthwalo, who was sitting in the audience.

The mile-high effect

Rapper Ludacris scored major brownie points when he popped the question to his girlfriend Eudoxie Mbouguiengue while on a private jet with friends. Not only did he propose in the traditional sense, he then had the words “Eudoxie will you marry me?” written in a field and asked her to look outside as they flew over.

“She didn’t say yes,” Ludacris captioned an Instagram photo collage of the couple’s big moment in 2014.

“She said HELL YES! #milehighproposal,” he added.

All that jazz

Cape Town songbird Claire Phillips’s grand gesture of love was made live on stage. During the recent Cape Town International Jazz Festival’s free concert, she proposed to her girlfriend of two years, Tasneem Patel. It all started when Phillips asked the audience to welcome Patel on stage. She then went down on one knee, saying: “I love you and want to spend the rest of my life with you, marry me.”
