London - Men, the lady in your life may be willing to trust you with her innermost thoughts and deepest fears, but don’t bank on her doing the same with her purse.

Half of us do not trust our partner when it comes to money, a survey has revealed – and women are the more cautious sex.

In the past year a third of us have got more wary about financial matters, with most blaming the recession and fears about job security.

But men remain more trusting in general and are more willing to lend money to friends or hand over the purse strings to their partner.

The research found Britons typically claim to have six people they can trust. But 70 percent admit they no longer share secrets with their best friend, and one in eight refuse to disclose their innermost thoughts to anybody at all.

More than half of the 2,000 respondents blamed their declining faith in humanity on scandals involving high-profile figures in positions of trust, such as politicians and bankers.

And the poll also revealed that we may have reason to be suspicious, with many confessing to having betrayed others.

Four in ten admit breaking someone’s confidence in the past year, and 20 percent own up to doing it in the past month.

The majority of those who betrayed a friend claimed they felt guilty as a result, but 14 percent confessed they ‘couldn’t care less’.

Overall, one in five refuse to trust others with their money. But the men surveyed were prepared to lend an average of £7,799.30 to a friend in need, whereas women would stump up only £3,687.10 to help someone close to them.

More than three-quarters of those polled across both sexes said they would not forgive a friend who failed to repay a loan.

Chris Pilling of Yorkshire Building Society, which carried out the research, said: ‘It is clear the public feel trust is being eroded for a variety of reasons, one of which is the failings of the very people we look to in order to guide us through challenging times.’ - Daily Mail
