Having splashed on some of my favourite evening perfume before heading out, when I walked past a friend of mine and he said, “You smell of sex,” I was feeling quietly coy.

Flattered, but not surprised after having read that a massive 80 percent of men and women feel more attracted to a person if they’re wearing a perfume they like, it’s clear that putting on perfume means more than wanting to smell good, it’s also a tool of seduction.

The ancient Egyptians originally used fragrances in religious ceremonies, but later the rubbing of a perfumed ointment into the skin became a pre-lovemaking preparation, much as we do today.

It wasn’t till the early 20th Century though that perfumes began to be mass-produced, with Coco Chanel’s Chanel No.5 being one of the first, which Marilyn Monroe famously and sexily claimed was the only thing she wore to bed.

Smell can play a very big part in sealing the deal when you’re after a man, so select the perfect perfume that will bring out the seductress in you and make him weak at the knees.

BE PICKY

When looking for ‘Mr Right’, we’re not afraid to set high standards, so be the same with your scent. The key to getting the best from your perfume is to speak to the experts, so don’t be afraid to shop around and ask for advice.

What many women don’t realise is that there are different scents for different times of the day.

Most often daytime fragrances are lighter and fresher with top notes which are citrus, floral, fruity, marine and fresh.

Evening fragrances are heavier they contain spices, rich floral notes, vanilla and precious woods. It’s likely that the richer ingredients found in evening perfumes will be heavier and more distinguished so it will have more of a sexy impact.

It’s also important to know the difference between Eau De Toilette (EDT) and Eau De Parfum (EDP) before buying.

An Eau De Toilette won’t last as long on the skin due to a lesser concentration of pure ingredients; it’s an excellent way to freshen up during the day and is often a more affordable alternative to the Eau de Parfum.

Eau de Parfum should last on the skin up to about six hours and are often more expensive, but due to their lasting qualities provide excellent value for money.

Finding the best perfume to compliment your natural scent can be a challenge and what smells great on your friends may not smell right on you.

It’s very often the acidity of an individual’s skin that can alter how a fragrance smells on them, therefore it’s important to try a new fragrance on the skin before purchasing it.

As there are many layers to a perfume it’s important to allow all of them a chance to develop on your skin before picking. The make up of perfume is divided into layers. The top note (top layer) generally lasts five to 10 minutes.

The middle notes (middle layer), or the main character of the fragrance, lasts 10 minutes to two hours.

The base note, (base layer) lasts from two hours onwards. Very often we’re swayed by our first impression of the top notes, but it’s much more complex than a simple spritz.

To be sure of your perfume, keep sniffing the sprayed area over the space of an hour to see how the notes change on your skin.

That way you’ll choose one that compliments your own tones and adds sensuality to your smell, rather than something that’ll have him running for the door!

WEAR IT WELL

With the science out the way, what we really want to know is how to make our scent last longer and where to wear it to really get his attention.

The obvious places to spritz are the pulse points – behind the ears, on the wrists, the base of the throat – which are all intimate hotspots if he gets his nose and his lips close enough for a kiss. But there are other ways to make sure your perfume wafts his way.

Why not try a spritz into the air and walk underneath it in the morning before you leave the house.

Spraying perfume onto your body after you’ve showered also helps the longevity because your pores are still open so the scent will absorb into your skin more easily. Rubbing a pea-sized amount of Vaseline into the skin before spritzing will also help the fragrance stick around for longer.

Layering is often a way of making a fragrance last longer on the skin. Using the shower gel or body lotion from the same range before applying the fragrance over the skin gives it a longer lasting effect, meaning you don’t have to use as much of your favourite perfume.

There are also ways of damaging your perfume. When you spray, resist the temptation to rub your wrists together or on your neck – this breaks the seal of the perfume.

This is something that is done all the time, without realising it’s bad perfume practice, but if you resist it, you’ll find that your scent does last longer.

DRIVE HIM WILD

Knowing what we want and what will smell great on us is priority number one, but sometimes it’s nice to know what will really drive him wild.

The Perfume Shop conducted new research into what scents will really make men purr. According to the professionals 19.5 percent of men react positively to a zesty orange aroma and sandalwood, with many being aroused at a chemical level.

We also know the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach and this doesn’t stop at food.

Men are largely attracted to Armani Code because of the vanilla and honey essence used within the scent, reminding men of doughnuts and cakes, so spritz this on to really get his taste buds going and then maybe something else…
