London - He has already helped improve the sex lives of millions of couples.

Now one of the inventors of Viagra claims to have a drug that will help many more experience the joy of sex and could even save marriages.

Mike Wyllie, one of the team who developed the cure for impotence in the Nineties, has produced Tempe, a spray-on treatment for premature ejaculation. It is a problem that affects at least one in four men and, says Dr Wyllie, can destroy couples.

Tempe has been judged safe and effective by the European Medicines Agency and is expected in bedroom cabinets early next year, although it will be available only on private prescription initially.

It contains low doses of anaesthetic, which help give a man more control, and in trials men who used it before sex lasted on average five times longer. However, some experienced side-effects, including burning sensations and headaches.

Dr Wyllie, formerly of pharmaceutical giant Pfizer and now of British biotech firm Plethora Solutions, said sexual problems can wreck self-esteem and make it difficult to form and maintain relationships. - Daily Mail
