Men's fashion is not the only area of style that evolves over time. Yes, male grooming goes through changes too. We lifts the lid on what's hot when it comes to looking dashing and debonair this summer.

Vintage Cologne

Cologne this season should be both masculine and simple. Aramis has relaunched a line of eight classic scents and though the smell of the '70s can be a little strong, this trend also includes lighter notes like vetiver, cedar and citrus.

Tamed beards

A little face fuzz is one of the cheapest ways to freshen up your style and save you money on razors and blades. This year it is all about the three-day beard, trimmed, tightened up and anything but messy. Remember, the longer your face the shorter your chin hair should be. For a casual look create a fade below the jaw line.

Do not use bar soap to clean your beard. Unless you're going for hobo chic, leftover soap scum will cause your facial hair to look dirty. Use a hair conditioner instead. The conditioner's cleaning ingredients will wash away bacteria and instantly soften your beard. And always pat dry with a towel

Clean-cut faces

If bearded bliss is not your scene, swipe a fresh razor clear across your face. With the resurgence of barbershops and tamed manes, it's safe to say that a clean cut is cool again.

Balanced body hair

For the gent who wants to keep his entire body “manscaped”, the idea is to remove hair where it doesn't belong - namely the back, shoulders and sides - while allowing it to roam (mostly) free on the chest, stomach, arms and legs. Always a recommended trend for summer - keep it trim and tidy.

Controlled brows

Just when you thought we had covered every inch of body hair, there's one - or rather two - more to add to the mix: eyebrows. Clear the middle region between them. Using a blunt-nosed scissor, carefully trim overgrown hair into its natural shape. Stay away from creating an unnatural arch, as it looks too feminine. Any stray hair can be eliminated with a quick tweeze.

All your shaving tips

The grooming gurus at the Barber Lounge and Spa answer some prickly questions when it comes to sporting a sleek shave.

How do I get the closest shave possible?

Shave after taking a hot shower. Hot water and steam will help to soften a beard and open pores allow for a smoother shave. For an improved shave, exfoliate to remove dead skin cells and lift stubble. Use a product designed for daily use.

Should I shave with the grain or against it?

Go with the grain. Shaving against the grain pulls the hairs more harshly as the blade rakes across the skin. This action will lead to nicks, razor burn and ingrown hairs. Should you feel shaving against the grain gives a closer shave then first shave with the grain.

Relather and gently shave against it in light pressure, short strokes. This action will reduce the chances of irritation.

How can I prevent razor burn?

Do not shave against the grain. Always use a clean, sharp razor and if possible a new blade with every shave. Rinse the razor after each stroke to remove hair built up between the blades. If you are using an electric razor clean the blades before and after each use.

What should I look for in an aftershave?

Use an aftershave that has moisturising and soothing properties. Avoid aftershaves containing and made of alcohol, they will leave skin tight and dry and can contribute towards further irritation. If it burns it should not be going on your skin at all. - The Mercury
