Day one of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Cape Town 2017 came to a dramatic and abrupt end as shows were called off due to strong winds.

Opening night of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Cape Town 2017 got off to a successful start with a spirited crowd and shows packed to the brim with Cape Town’s fashion elite and an eclectic mix of local and international media, personalities and celebrities.

During the start of the second last show guests noticed the marque shaking due to strong winds.

AFI’s safety officers made the executive decision to stop the second last show halfway through and cancel the last show of the first night of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Cape Town 2017, just after Shana Morland. With a secure tent structure able to withstand winds up to 100km per hour, confirmed by AFI’s appointed structural engineer, the wind gaining momentum at 58 km per hour went against our priority of protecting people.

Presented with a severe safety risk and prioritising the safety of all involved, an announcement was made for guests, models, designers and crew to vacate the premises on The Meadway.

Whilst all precautions were taken in order for AFI to be able to host Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Cape Town 2017 in Camps Bay; and the equipment was cleared from a safety perspective. In the wake of the cancelled Cape Town Cycle Tour, we are currently experiencing abnormal weather conditions in Cape Town.

Our team, in their various fields of expertise, are going to re-evaluate the situation and investigate further, and more information will be available in the morning.
