Durban - Leigh Schubert was the only Durban designer to show at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Joburg at the weekend.

Schubert, who recently moved to Cape Town, was one of 34 designers who presented collections in 15 shows over three days at the Sandton Convention Centre (March 20 to 22). Among them were Marianne Fassler, David Tlale, Stefania Morland, Abigail Betz, Morphe, Avant Apparel and Loin Cloth & Ashes.

Schubert, who has shown at Rosemount Australian Fashion Week and in 2012 designed the opening ceremony kit for the South African athletes at the London Olympics and Paralympics, says her latest collection was a bit of madness.

“How the brain works, and how thoughts are created and why, that’s what inspired me.

“I used stripes and introverted seam details to symbolise the paths thoughts take and created voluminous shapes with pops of bright colour to make it all a bit crazy.

“I think its quite fashionable to be a bit nuts – so we should embrace that.”

Schubert used a neutral palette of chocolate, liquorice, taupe and rust, and brought in pops of orange, ochre and cerise pink. She used a waterproof trench coat fabric in dresses, cut-and-sew knits for warmth, and an imported heavyweight ponti for the stretch and sporty items.

She says she will maintain her presence in Durban, and expand her brand in Cape Town.

“The major aim is to get my brand known in Cape Town, where there is potential to expand and compete with the new international high-street brands.”
