London - French historians claim to have found proof that Coco Chanel was a Nazi spy.

The celebrated fashion designer had an affair with a Nazi officer in occupied France during the Second World War.

But a documentary called L’Ombre d’un Doute (The Shadow OfA Doubt), broadcast on the France 3 channel, claimed to show details of a Nazi file which proves Chanel herself worked for the Abwehr, Hitler’s military intelligence agency.

The document, held in the French defence ministry archives, says the designer had the codename Westminster – a reference to her past affair with the Duke of Westminster.

The programme claimed: “Chanel was on the best of terms with the Germans”.

It went on to suggest she used her Nazi influence in a bid to reclaim her perfume business from the Jewish Wertheimer family, which acquired Chanel No 5 in 1924. - Daily Mail
