The spring and summer season of SA Fashion Week (SAFW) is under way at Johannesburg’s Sandton City. Local designers are showcasing their latest collections in two parts. Wednesday and Thursday was for the women’s collections and tonight and tomorrow (Saturday) is for the best in menswear. The fashion week began with a special presentation, Style By SA by Woolworths SA. The Style By SA design collective includes designers Rich Mnisi, Thebe Magugu and Wanda Lephoto.

The collaborative nature of these collections allows designers to leverage the reach and exposure of Woolworths to make their brands more accessible to local consumers and establish themselves as household names. The results of this synergy are garments with powerful messages that question gender roles and ignite nostalgia.

Mnisi has just returned from Nigeria, where he showcased at the Arise Fashion Week. He is known for gender-fluid clothing that impresses with intricate detailing and over-the-top fashion-forward styling. Models walked the runway in zebra-print coats, his signature rainbow-coloured dresses, fitted pastel formal pants and bomber jackets. The styling included look-at-me floppy, wide black hats that stole the show.

Making his Style By SA runway debut, Wanda Lephoto, one quarter of Johannesburg creative collective The Sartists, presented minimalist separates in pants, shorts, dungarees and jackets. Lephoto’s aesthetic is inspired by everyday dressing.

Thebe Magugu’s unconventional clothing is for fashion lovers who are not afraid to push the envelope. Deconstructed jackets, pleated two-toned skirts and high-waisted leather pants were some of the designs that made up the collection. Overall the collections were functional clothing that can be incorporated in one’s closet for both winter and summer.
