A man, believed to be in his early thirties, drowned in a swimming pool at a school in Athlone, Pietermaritzburg on Saturday afternoon.

ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said in a statement that at approximately 1pm, paramedics from ER24 arrived to find another service provider on the scene.

"It is believed that the man was found by members of his family when they initiated a search for him. Sadly, there was nothing that paramedics could do for him and he was declared dead at the scene."
