A 37-year-old man is set to appear in the Mahlabathini Magistrates Court on Monday for 12 counts of rape.

On Thursday, the Ulundi Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) arrested a suspect for 12 counts of rape which were committed in Ulundi and surrounding areas.

Police in a statement said the suspect had been preying on unsuspecting women employed in the Ulundi Plaza, especially those who worked late.

The attacks on these women have been happening since 2012 until last year.

Colonel Thembeka Mbele explained that the suspect would wait along the railway line near Mbhoshongweni area, Ulundi searching for his next victim. All victims were threatened with a knife and firearm; the suspect would then drag them into a nearby bush area and rape them.

In 2015, the suspect was arrested for rape and appeared in court but due to insufficient evidence the mater was withdrawn.

With the use of DNA evidence, the accused was linked to 12 other cases he had committed in the same area.

Warrant Officer Mucu Luhlongwane appealed to victims of similar crimes in the areas mentioned to contact him on 035 874 0330 or 071 560 2976.
