Police chased it along the M13, coming from St Johns Avenue towards Durban, all the way to Stapleton Road.
Apparently several shots were fired and the car rolled several times before coming to a stop in the centre median.
Sources say three suspects were killed.
Earlier this month, a shootout between police and suspects in north Durban, shut the N2 freeway and gridlocked the city and surrounds.
Four suspects were killed then.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane confirmed the incident and said that police were investigating.
