Durban: Widow of slain South African Lindani Myeni, Lindsay, has expressed her disappointment after a US prosecutor announced that he would not be pursuing criminal charges against the police officers who shot dead her husband.
The KZN-born former rugby player from Empangeni was shot dead by Honolulu police in the island state of Hawaii, in the US on April 14 this year.
Honolulu prosecutor Steve Alm announced at a press conference on Wednesday that the police officers were justified in shooting Myeni in April this year and they would not face murder charges.
Taking to social media after the announcement, Lindsay Myeni spoke of disappointment and anguish.
“I bumped my head, backed into a car, took my sick babies to the hospital, and the officers who murdered my husband got off with ’no criminal charges’. I think this marks maybe one of the lowest days in my life,” she wrote on her Facebook page.
“Regardless of these painful trials, everything is going to be okay eventually. My worst fear has already come true, there’s nothing more anyone can do to my man. He’s at peace now and that’s still all that matters to me at the end of the day.”
Meanwhile, friends, relatives and random strangers sent messages of support to Lindsay Myeni, praising her bravery and equally expressing their disappointment with the findings.
One user wrote: “I don’t know you - only your story, but as a mother and as a wife I salute your strength and I pray that you find courage every day to raise your beautiful babies with hope, forgiveness and be able to live a legacy he would have wanted for you all,” she said.
KwaZulu-Natal government spokesperson Lennox Mabaso said: “The government has noted the news on the probe over Myeni’s killing with anger, disappointment and outrage,” he said.
Attempts to get comment from the Myeni family were unsuccessful yesterday.
