Durban - Did someone just try to poison Durban's interim mayor, Fawzia Peer?

Questions were raised following a tweet by DA eThekwini caucus leader, Nicole Graham.

I think we just witnessed someone try to poison Fawzia Peer. The mood in #durbancouncil remains strangely cavalier.

It is believed that during a council meeting on Thursday, an announcement was made that there was a substance in one of the water bottles.

The Speaker just announced that there is paraffin in someone’s water bottle and told us not to drink the water. The Deputy Mayor just left abruptly covering her mouth. What the hell just happened?!

Graham said the meeting continued despite Peer's abrupt exit.

It’s very concerning. This council has become characterised by thuggery and chaos," she told The Mercury.

Peer is the city's interim mayor following Zandile Gumede's suspension.

Earlier, the Daily News reported that city manager, Sipho Nzuza, arrived for the full council sitting, shrouded by a number of body guards.

In a post on Facebook, Graham said chaos erupted at the City Hall when Nzuza arrived.
