Bullet-riddled vehicle found abandoned in a Cornubia parking lot

Marshall Security said it was alleged that a vehicle with bullet holes was abandoned by the driver after he came under attack while driving in the vicinity of Cornubia Mall.

Durban - Marshall Security said reaction officers found a bullet-riddled vehicle on Tuesday afternoon in a parking lot in Cornubia, north of Durban.

Andreas Mathios, from Marshall Security, said they received a report of an unoccupied vehicle riddled with bullet holes in a parking lot at Cornubia just after 3pm.

Mathios said at this stage the circumstances leading up to this incident are unclear.

He said Marshall Security officers are currently at the scene awaiting the arrival of the SAPS who have been notified.

He said according to information received at the scene, it was alleged that the driver of the vehicle came under fire from unknown assailants as he was driving on a road near a taxi rank.

Mathios said the man then raced to a shopping centre, parked his car and jumped into another vehicle.

On Monday, The Mercury reported that a man was killed in a shooting incident on the R102 Gopalall Hurbans Road in the vicinity of Walter Reid Road in oThangathi.

The man sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was declared dead at the scene by paramedics.

According to Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa), reaction officers were on patrol in the area just before 7.40am when they discovered the bullet-riddled vehicle.

“It was established that the driver of the vehicle was killed after the occupants of an unknown vehicle opened fire on him. The deceased is believed to be a taxi owner. However, this could not be immediately confirmed,” said Rusa spokesperson Prem Balram.
