Durban - DA councillors will conduct oversight visits to several areas in eThekwini where residents have been affected by sewage spills as a result of ageing infrastructure and poor maintenance this week.

KZN DA spokesperson on Social Development, Mmabatho Tembe, said on Tuesday that there has been a growing number of reports of people falling sick due to contaminated water.

Tembe said there have also been growing reports of a significantly negative environmental impact on rivers and marine life.

“Last week, the DA called on the Minister of Water and Sanitation, Senzo Mchunu, for the allocation of an equitable water services infrastructure grant to repair and maintain the eThekwini system that has been increasingly neglected over the past two decades. This has been a major contributor to sewage leaks,” she said.

Tembe said the party was greatly concerned about the health of residents in these areas and the effect on homes and businesses.
