DURBAN - KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Sipho Hlomuka has put disaster management teams on alert after the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a warning about severe thunderstorms that could hit large parts of the province between this afternoon and Tuesday.

According to the warning, severe thunderstorms are expected to result in damage to settlements and infrastructure due to strong winds.

The SAWS has warned of injuries to humans and livestock and damage to vehicles due to hail and lightning and said heavy downpours may lead to localised flooding.

Hlomuka urged residents to be very cautious as the inclement weather conditions could pose a risk to human life.

Areas that are expected to be affected are Harry Gwala, Ilembe, uMgungundlovu and Uthukela districts and the eThekwini metro.

Disaster management teams will be monitoring areas that are prone to weather-related incidents.

Senzo Mzila, spokesperson for Cogta, echoed the MEC’s concerns.

“From this afternoon, we can expect major thunderstorms, lightning and heavy winds. Residents have been warned to exercise extreme caution, especially those who travel,” said Mzila.
