The EFF has warned the Zululand district mayor against victimising staff members, saying they can always exercise the vote of no confidence option available to them.

DURBAN - With hardly a week in office for the new term of local government, Zululand District mayor Thulasizwe Buthelezi finds himself in a spot of bother after the EFF issued a warning that they could call for his removal from office through a vote of no confidence.

The warning comes after the mayor allegedly victimised some staff members. The EFF helped the IFP to secure an outright majority in a number of municipalities, including Zululand District Municipality.

EFF KwaZulu-Natal chairperson Vusi Khoza said they had received reports that the mayor was victimising staff members that he had seen campaigning for other parties building up to the elections held earlier this month.

“Our view is that the mayor should distance himself from worker-related issues and allow officials to handle the matter,” Khoza told The Mercury today.

He warned that the EFF would always side with the workers, especially when they are being victimised.

“We advise those close to the mayor to caution him against victimising workers. Just because we voted for him does not give him carte blanche,” Khoza continued.

The EFF chairperson called for the reversal of what he labelled “stupid and unprocedural suspensions” without elaborating further on the matter.

Attempts to get comment from the district municipality about the allegations made against Buthelezi and about whether any staff members had been placed on suspension were unsuccessful.
