Durban - eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda has congratulated Nkosinathi Maphumulo, who is popularly known by his stage name “DJ Black Coffee” following his Grammy award win yesterday.

The mayor relayed his congratulatory remarks after the star, who was born in KwaZulu-Natal, clinched the prestigious award at the 64th Annual Recording Academy Awards on Sunday.

The producer left millions of South Africans beaming with pride and joy when he scooped his first ever Grammy award in the category for the Best Dance/Electronic album for his 12-track album titled Subconsciously.

The mayor said the city would also celebrate the win.

“His win is our win as the city of Durban. We have an existing tourism initiative partnership with him which saw DJ Black Coffee record a vignette at various tourist sites to promote the city as a premier tourist attraction,” said Kaunda.

Kaunda added that he was hopeful that Black Coffee’s win would further propel tourism for the city.

“With this Grammy win, I am certain that he will further promote eThekwini across the globe. We are proud of his achievement and to have partnered with him to promote the city,” he stated.

Meanwhile, plans to promote Durban as the ultimate destination of choice are under way in preparation for the Easter holidays.

Tour operators from Gauteng, Mpumalanga and Western Caper convened to explore the city between meetings aimed at stimulating trade exchange and tourism recovery, as Durban Tourism hosted the interprovincial tour this past weekend.

The intra-provincial destination promotional events are scheduled to take place at Pietermaritzburg’s Liberty Midlands Mall on April 8, Meerensee Mall in Richards Bay on April 9 and at Shelly Beach on April 10.
