DURBAN - eThekwini Municipality says a clean-up operation led by the deputy mayor, which started on Sunday, is progressing well.

The municipality said the operation is aimed at dealing with illegal traders and businesses and addressing service delivery concerns across the Durban CBD over the course of the week.

eThekwini Municipality deputy mayor and chairperson of the Human Settlements and Infrastructure Committee, Philani Mavundla, said this is one of the many initiatives implemented to keep the city clean.

“There are so many illegal activities going on in the city and that has to be stopped to reclaim the city,” he said.

The deputy mayor said the municipality is striving to educate city patrons about the importance of keeping the city clean in every corner.

Mavundla emphasised that it is everyone’s responsibility to adhere to municipal by-laws.

He said law enforcement is being intensified as it is the only solution to root out illegal activities in the city.

“We are mindful of human rights, but we are no longer tolerating any mischievous acts. Law-abiding citizens must not panic as we are targeting by-law defaulters. We want to bring hope of a cleaner and safer city,” said Mavundla.

During the operation, municipal officials have fixed street lights and leaking water pipes and cleared blocked stormwater drains.
