Durban - An eThekwini Municipality employee and a contractor were left seriously injured after a wall collapsed on top of them while workers were repairing a power cable on Stapleton Road in Pinetown on Tuesday.

Emer-G-Med Paramedics spokesperson Kyle van Reenen said two men were seriously injured when a wall collapsed on top of them.

He said both men were treated and stabilised on scene by emergency care practitioners.

“One was airlifted with the assistance of the Netcare911 aeromedical helicopter to a specialist facility for the care that he required,” said van Reenen.

Van Reenen said the second man was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital for further care.

EThekwini Municipality wished its staff member and the municipal contractor a speedy recovery after they suffered injuries while undertaking repairs on an MV (medium voltage) cable.

Municipal spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela said the horrible accident occurred when the boundary wall at the site collapsed on them.

“Thanks to the actions of our courageous employees on site who managed to rescue them from under the rubble, there were no fatalities,” he said.

Mayisela said both employees are currently recovering in hospital.

He added that the cause of the wall collapse is being investigated.
