DURBAN - THE family of an eThekwini Municipality employee who was gunned down in his office last month, said they were scared that if the suspect who is in custody received bail, the real perpetrators of the crime would kill him just to weaken the murder case of their loved one.

Amos Nkosinathi Ngcobo, who was the superintendent at the Water and Sanitation Unit, was shot in his office in Springfield last month. He died at the scene.

The family attended the case in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Thursday. They said they wanted to see justice being served.

Speaking to The Mercury on Thursday, Ngcobo’s younger brother Sphiwe Mthembu said the court should not consider giving the suspect bail because he was not the mastermind.

Ngcobo said they knew that the suspect played a role in the plotting of his brother’s murder, but the three hit men were still roaming the streets, and if the suspect was released on bail they would come for him.

“The arrested suspect is not the hit man but a transporter. This means there are still people on the loose here. We really want to know what happened and why my brother was killed,” he said.

He said the city still owed them an explanation of how the hit man passed security and reached his brother’s office with weapons, and managed to commit a crime on their premises.

Another family member, who refused to be named, said the municipality did not show them humanity.

“At the funeral there were no municipal officials to comfort us, there was no one from the municipality. It is very confusing that a man is shot at work and no one heard the gunshots. Where were the securities at this time?”

The suspect, Tholinhlanhla Shezi, who is accused of murder, appeared yesterday in court for bail application. However, that could not happen because the court was still waiting for a letter from the directorate of public prosecution. The matter was postponed to April 5.

Shezi was arrested on February 22 and made his first court appearance on February 24.

The Ngcobos said they were disappointed with the delays in the case.
