Fleeing suspects open fire after robbing man of firearm, briefcase in Umbilo

Police said after the suspects robbed a man in Umbilo, they began shooting as they drove away from the scene.

Durban - A man was robbed of his gun and briefcase as he jumped out of his vehicle on the corner of Che Guevara and Hunt Road in Umbilo on Monday.

Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala said the complainant alleged that on Monday morning at 9am he was jumping out of his vehicle when he was accosted by two armed suspects.

“At gunpoint they robbed him of his firearm, briefcase and drove off. While fleeing the scene the suspects opened fire,” said Gwala.

A case of robbery was opened at Umbilo police station.

Mzansi Tactical Unit said its members and Umbilo SAPS responded to reports of a shooting in progress on Monday at a garage on Che Guevara Road.

The security company said it was given a description of the suspects’ vehicle and upon arrival a search of a Blue VW Golf GTI was done.

“A 9mm Glock, black in colour was located … Multiple cartridges were found on the scene.

No reports of any injuries to any person were reported and the reason for discharging of the firearm is not known,” said Mzanzi.

Mzansi Tactical Unit said the driver of the vehicle was placed under arrest by one of its members and Umbilo SAPS.
