DURBAN - Marshall Security said a house breaking suspect was found hiding in a residence in Umgeni Park in a recent incident.

Tyron Powell, Marshall Security spokesperson said, in the incident last Friday, armed response officers and special operations team members responded to the scene after being alerted by a vigilant neighbour.

Powell said the neighbour reported seeing someone jumping into a yard in the Umgeni Park area.

“Multiple armed response officers were dispatched and arrived on scene within two minutes of receiving the call. Special operation team members also responded as backup and arrived on scene shortly thereafter. While conducting a property check, our team noticed the front sliding door and gate of the house was forced open. A perimeter was immediately set around the house to avoid any escape routes as it was believed that the suspect was still inside the house.”

Powell said members of the special operations team then conducted an internal check of the house.

“During the search, a suspect armed with a screwdriver was seen hiding behind one of the bedroom doors. The suspect was disarmed of his weapon and immediately arrested.”

Powell said when the suspect was searched, multiple cigarette lighters were found in his possession together with housebreaking implements.

He added the homeowner, who was not at home at the time, had been unaware of the housebreaking. After being informed about the incident, he filed charges against the suspect.

Powell added Greenwood Park SAPS arrived on scene and detained the suspect who will be charged for housebreaking and theft.

Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala said a case of burglary was opened in Greenwood Park for investigation.

“It is alleged by the complainant that on 25 March 2022 at 4.38pm, he was performing his duties as a security guard when he received a complaint of burglary on Anthony Road, Umgeni Park.

“On arrival at the scene he noticed that a sliding door and the gate were opened. On searching the premises they found an unknown man with housebreaking implements. Greenwood Park police were called and a 26-year-old suspect was placed under arrest.”

Gwala said the suspect appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court earlier this week and the case was remanded to April 4.
