KwaZulu-Natal Premier Zikalala wishes MEC Nkonyeni a speedy recovery after an accident on R66

Durban - Peggy Nkonyeni, KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison was involved in an accident on the R66 outside Ulundi on Tuesday.

Nkonyeni was returning from an engagement with the Premier Sihle Zikalala and Zulu king, the King Misuzulu kaZwelithini in Ulundi and was on her way to her next engagement in the Dannhauser Local Municipality.

In a statement, Zikalala wished her and her close protectors a speedy recovery following the accident

“MEC Nkonyeni and her close protectors were involved in an accident after a tyre burst on the vehicle as they were travelling along the R66,” he said in the statement.

Speaking on the event at the Dannhauser Local Municipality: Zikalala said: “She was going to launch the youth economic empowerment programme that will see more than 4 000 young people employed by the Department of Transport,” he said.

The Premier’s Office said Zikalala and the Director-General Dr Nonhlanhla Mkhize, were among the first people to arrive at the scene of the accident.

“Nkonyeni is currently undergoing a complete medical evaluation. She is fully conscious and alert with the Premier and the Director-General by her side at the hospital. On behalf of the people and government of KwaZulu-Natal we wish MEC Nkonyeni and her protectors a speedy recovery,” the Premier’s office said.

The IFP in the KZN Legislature also wish Nkonyeni a speedy recovery.

"The IFP was shocked to hear the news of the unfortunate accident; we can only pray and wish the MEC and her aides a speedy recovery. Our prayers are with them at this time”.
