Durban –An 82-year-old man was pinned underneath his sliding driveway gate at his home in La Lucia on Wednesday after he lost his footing while working on the gate.

Andreas Mathias, of Marshall Security’s community support, said the emergency dispatch centre received a call just before 11am from a resident in the area who reported that a heavy gate had fallen on an 82-year-old man.

Mathias said the man was working on his gate when he reportedly lost his footing and the gate fell on top of him.

He said Marshall Security dispatched an armed response officer to the scene.

On arrival, the officer established that the man was pinned underneath the gate.

“The armed response officer then proceeded to assist in removing the man from underneath the steel gate, and paramedics arrived on scene minutes later,” said Mathias.

Mathias said the man was stabilised on the scene by paramedics before being to a nearby medical facility for further medical care.

Last week, The Mercury reported that a man died in a freak accident on Brighton Road in the Bluff in Durban when the truck delivering his order of bricks rolled over him and came to rest at the back of a house.

The man, believed to be in his thirties, sustained major injuries and there was nothing paramedics could do for him. He was declared deceased on the scene.

The family living in the house were not at home when the truck crashed into it.

However, according to ward 66 councillor Zoë Solomon, they had to pack up their belongings as they were unable to remain in the house due to the extent of the damage.
