LOOK: Relief efforts continue to assist people most affected by devastating KZN floods

Government, organisations and members of the public continue to provide relief including food, water and other essentials to people affected by the recent KZN floods.

Durban - Government, organisations and members of the public continue to provide relief including food, water and other essentials to communities affected by the recent floods that resulted in hundreds of deaths and a trail of destruction across KwaZulu-Natal.

Gift of the Givers said families were contacting the organisation for assistance.

The organisation said families in the Brookdale, Palmview and Sastri Park areas in Phoenix were given mattresses, blankets, 5-litre water containers, and food parcels including rice, oil and mealie meal.

“Our team was touched by the stories of the residents who escaped near death from the flooding of their homes. About 70 families were provided with essentials to assist them in rebuilding their home environment again,” said the relief organisation.

In response to the plight of the residents at the Mvuzane informal settlement in Clermont, the organisation said it distributed 5-litre water bottles, blankets and food parcels.

In uMdloti, Gift of the Givers delivered blankets to 200 people who were given shelter at the uMdloti Primary School after losing their homes and belongings.

Food parcels were also donated to 15 families, whose homes were badly damaged on Tiburon Road in Newlands East.

The community has also stepped in and donated a hot meal every day since last Tuesday.

The Saaberie Chishty Society distributed water and food hampers in Phoenix and Tongaat.

“We would like to thank all those who made this possible and we pray that the difficulties that are being experienced in the KZN region are soon overcome,” said the organisation.

The Nation Builders organisation together with Glenhills Helping Hands prepared and distributed meals to approximately 40 families whose homes were damaged in the Lot 14 area in KwaDukuza.

The Joyce Meyer Ministries have partnered with the Adams Foundation in Newlands to provide food, water and relief packs to those affected by the floods.

On the eThekwini Municipality Facebook page, the city was supported by members of the SANDF and SAPS to deliver food supplies to the community of Georgedale in Hammarsdale.
