DURBAN - A 22-year-old man and his accomplice have been sentenced for the 2019 murder and robbery of a man in the Ekuvukeni area in the UThukela District Municipality.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Nqobile Gwala said the Ezakheni Regional Court in Ladysmith sentenced Simphiwe Carlos Mtshali, 22, to 22 years in jail for murder and 12 years for robbery.

Gwala said his co-accused Bongani Buthelezi, 25, was handed a life sentence for murder plus 15 years for robbery.

“Their sentences came after the court heard how they brutally killed Mphumzeni Isaac Mbongwa, who was 43 years old, ”she said.

Gwala said on June 29, 2019 at 3:30pm, Mtshali’s grandmother brought him into Ekuvukeni SAPS after he shared information of how he killed a man with his co-accused.

“Police and the accused proceeded to the identified house in Ekuvukeni where the body of Mbongwa was found in a pool of blood. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene,” she said.

During the police investigation, Gwala said it was established that the victim was also robbed of several appliances as well as a vehicle.

She said the vehicle was later found set alight in the Somsuku area in Ekuvukeni.

“The stolen property was recovered at Buthelezi's house. Both accused were placed under arrest on charges of murder and house robbery,” she said.
