Man who killed Hulamin employee and his son sentenced to life imprisonment plus 51 years for murder, among other charges

Police said the man accused of murdering a Hulamin security guard and his son in Pietermaritzburg was found in possession of an illegal firearm, linked by ballistic evidence to the double murder.

Durban - The Pietermaritzburg High Court handed a 40-year-old man a hefty term in prison for the double murder of a Hulamin security guard and his son among other charges on Friday.

Provincial police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said the accused Thanduxolo Zungu was convicted on for two counts of murder, attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, malicious damage to property, arson as well as unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Ngcobo said Zungu committed these crimes between January 2019 and March 2020.

She said on January 28, 2020 at 4.15am, Zungu shot and killed Nhlanhla Dlamini, 48, and his 24-year-old son Nkanyiso Dlamini at Sinating Location In Pietermaritzburg.

“He was arrested on 5 November 2020 and he was linked to a string of other cases, including being in unlawful possession of a firearm which later confirmed by a ballistic expert as the firearm that was used in the double murder of Dlamini and his son.”

Police said Zungu was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder and an additional 51 years for the other charges.

Magma Security and Investigations were involved in the investigation which led to the arrest of the accused.

Magma owner Shaheen Suleiman said in 2019 and 2020 a series of incidents targeting Hulamin employees led to his security company being mandated to investigate.

“After intensive investigation by Magma working in conjunction with the Provincial Organised Crime Unit, an arrest was made and the case was finalised in the High Court on 12/08/2022,” he said.

Suleiman said on March 3, 2020 the accused was arrested for being in possession of a firearm with serial number filed off and 8 rounds of live ammunition.

In another count, Suleiman said on July 12, 2019, the accused burnt the vehicle of another Hulamin employee at his residence on Crompton Street near the Sweetwater’s location.

According to Suleiman the man was the presiding officer in a departmental hearing against the the accused.

He said the accused was found not guilty of making threatening calls to the presiding officer at his office the day after his vehicle was burnt.
